Prison Ministry(Listen to Jackie Calhoun's Minute for Mission update on Prison Ministry here) In
April 2001, Jackie Calhoun joined a friend from another church who was doing a
Bible study two afternoons a month with women inmates at Rockbridge Regional Jail. Since then, over 150 different women
have participated in their study. There
are usually no more than 12 women at the jail at one time. Some are only there for a few days and
others are there up to a year. The
Bible study is voluntary. Inmates
are brought to the study in groups of 1 to 4 women at a time, so there is a
chance for personal interaction with each of them. Some of the women have a fairly good knowledge of Scripture,
but others know almost nothing about the Bible when they first come to the
study. Our
church provides New International Version Bibles for any of the women who don’t
already have one. Whenever women
are new to the study, Jackie always begins by handing out verses that outline
the basic gospel message. It’s
important for the women to know how to have a relationship with God before they
start studying anything else. Many
of them are heartbroken over being separated from their children who have been
left with relatives or in foster care.
Our church provides “Biblical Virtues to Pray for your Kids” - cards that
have verses and Christian attributes as guidelines for prayer. If
you have any questions or would like to know more about this ministry, please
